It's about alignment.  If your Information Systems Strategic Plan (ISSP) is not in line with you Business Strategic Plan (BSP) you will lose time, money, and opportunities.  Further, as Michael Porter of Harvard points out, your BSP must feed into your ISSP, and your ISSP should feed back to your BSP.  Each influences the other.  If you view each of them as tools that feed one another, you position yourself to get the best from both.

Of course, this is a lot easier said than done.  It takes leadership and vision at the top of an organization to develop and deploy a working strategy.  It takes leadership, commitment, and innovation at the top in Information Systems to acquire and/or build the systems the business needs, AND to provide new, effective, innovative solutions to help the company advance its goals and objectives.  Long gone are the days when IS could simply take orders from management.  Now it must be a valuable asset that goes beyond simple networks and computer resources. IS must be a full partner that helps a company market, innovate, and become more competitive.  It must remember that it is not simply Information Systems, or Information Technology.  It should be Business Information Systems.

Our role is simple.  We help with Business Information Systems.  We can help draft the IS Strategic Plan, the Business Continuity Plan, the Disaster Recovery Plan and related documents.  We can alert you to new technologies, both computer and non-computer based.  We can provide interim or add-on support for your IS functions.  We can help bridge the gap between IS and the other departments  in your company.  We can help design, develop, test, and deploy new systems.  We can help plug the gaps that exist in your IS department whether due to resource limitations, or the need for part-time/limited assistance rather than full time employees.  We can also mentor key people, but we suggest that you have specific projects in mind so that the mentoring can be laid on a template of real, current needs.  In short, applied mentoring is more effective than less-focused, generalized mentoring and aligns better with company objectives..
